Memento Mori
The evening before the 20th anniversary of 9/11. I had gotten into the habit of documenting the Tribute in Light installation every year it comes up. Sadly it eluded me this time around. I'd make my way towards the lights but as soon as I'd arrive they'd turn off. Didn't stop me from getting my shots in though.
I have no idea who my guy on the park bench is but every now and then he'd look up, wondering what this dude with a tripod was doing. Must've figured me for a tourist or something.
A few weeks later I read this quote about memento mori. How every photo you ever take regardless of the subject matter is contributing to that subject's memento mori. Strangers, buildings, grand things made by man will live on long after they've gone thanks to a simple photograph.
Crazy thing to wrap your head around. This thing that started out as a hobby decades ago giving you a sense of purpose. After I got my shots in I packed up and dude gave me this knowing nod and I did the same.
